In the evolving landscape of Microsoft Azure, staying efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with industry standards is now a given. If you’re not doing it, you’re likely not adopting new technologies well. Microsoft Azure, recognising this, has finally integrated two well known features together: Azure Advisors with Log Analytics Workspaces.
This fusion of services and technology is not just a feature update; it’s a transformative approach to managing Azure resources, particularly Log Analytics itself which can be notorious as a dumping ground for everything, especially when centralised. What this is now allowing organisations to do is uplift, upkeep and control their environments without the need for for someone to be a gatekeeper for Azure Log Analytics.
Azure Advisor: It is your personalised Cloud Consultant
If you’re not using it already, Azure Advisor is your Azure Cloud Consultant that you get effectively for free! “They” are uniquely tailored and much better equipped to enhance your Azure experience by analysing resource configurations and usage telemetry, providing tailored recommendations.
These suggestions aim to optimise four crucial aspects of your cloud presence:
- Cost-effectiveness (sometimes known as FinOps),
- Performance,
- Reliability, and
- Security
What’s new?
In terms of this update, there isn’t a great deal new, but rather just some small enhancements of how Azure Advisor can investigate Azure Log Analytics itself. This effectively allows it to help with its own right-sizing, data retention and table deletion. What’s really the benefit here is the start of this integration, which I can see becoming a formidable way in optimising and improving Azure overall.
It’s now able to inspect your Log Analytics workspace data, It’s only a matter of time before it will start using that data to provide further recommendations.
My thoughts
In 2024, there is simply no excuse for not right-sizing your Azure resources properly to drive down Azure cost. The integration of Azure Advisor into the Log Analytics Workspace is a clear indication that Microsoft is committed to not just providing a platform but also ensuring its optimal use. This move aligns with the industry’s push towards more efficient, cost-effective, and reliable cloud services.
Conclusion
The new features in Azure Advisor signify a major leap in cloud resource management. They represent Microsoft Azure’s commitment to empowering users with tools and insights needed to optimize their cloud footprint effectively. By aligning with industry standards and offering intuitive, practical solutions, Azure is setting a new benchmark in cloud management, making it an essential tool for anyone looking to maximize their Azure environment.
